According to Amensty International(http://www.amnesty.org/)
Venezuelas human rights are being threantended...and deninded...
Between Febuary 27 and March 4 2004 Politcial Violence Erupated. This included mass demontrations...
14 People were killeded and 200 people injureded. 500 people were sent to dention centers(Jail).
Oppostion(to the goverment) said the securaity forces abusused its power(like the old saying goes: My rights only go as far as my arms swing before they hit your nose). The goverment said that police forces(or securaity) did everything within the limits of the law.
What does this say about the law? How does it really reflect the society?
Amnesty International believes that tear gas, rubber bullets, and batons where abused. These weapons are only to be used to matian public order...however when there was already public order is when they got out of hand.
Instead of creating public order out of a mass of chaos(that didnt really exist according to reports...including reports found at www.venezuelaanaylis.com) they just created more problems for securatiy forces.
Many of the people who where sent to jail never had a criminal record before Febuary 27 2004. They where thrown in on little voilence, on top of the abuse that they sustainded from police forces.
They also faced tourtre(illegal in international law, including the Genva Conventions).
Following the mass protests(which i must point out was silenced by the media, most likely due to the contervisal Social Responsibility Law) where a expersion of free speech. When the police forces abused there power they infringed on the citzens free speech rights, once again in voilation of the New Constitution of the Bolivaian Republic of Venezuela)
Related to Canada on a much less voilent scale, but equally powerful. The G8 Summit in Quebec City in April 2001 was a clash between civilizians and police(working on behave of the provincial/munpical levels of goverment). (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/special/g8summit/stories/archive02.html) We as citzens also experinced something simmliar to what happended in Venezuleza... But imagine, if our Human rights(thankfully protected in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) was taken away like what happended in Venezulea imagine how much aggersion, fear, and other emotions we would have to our goverment... We live in a society that can be thankfull for its rights...
Given this information, i am more then happy to be living in a country that we all often take for granted...
